Characteristics of Gifted Learners

- Good thinkers, excelling in reasoning, understanding, abstract thinking, and problem-solving.

- Quick learners, they might learn from being shown something once and see obstacles as learning opportunities.

- Advanced verbal abilities, early language development, wide vocabulary, and with complex sentences (Some may talk later than usual) but will advance accordingly.

- Can observe advanced receptive language, can comprehend concepts, vocab, and questions very well.

- Great memory, retaining recent information and early life events in great detail.

- Wide range of interests, might be interested in things outside what is required.

- Preference for older companions, prefers working with older children and adults to age who reflect views and levels.

- Great concentration and attention span: upper level children may be able to concentrate on multiple things, have goals, and a want to learn.

- Good observation, eye for certain details.

- Has interests in puzzles, maps, and diagrams; well sophisticated in drawing and writing.

Instructional Strategies/Accommodations For Gifted Learners 

- Project Based Learning, projects to work on that align with the students interests.

- Collaboration: Have gifted students work with each other to develop skills.

- Open assignments, have the gifted students choose their ideas on how they can best demonstrate their knowledge.

- Have a flexible schedule and grouping. Letting the students group on their interests also allows them to move through their content at their preferred pace.

- Offer Tiered assignments, giving different levels of difficulty for the same topic, letting the gifted students tackle more complex work while not slowing down the rest of the class.
